Introduction :

Kajla Janakalyan Samity has been working for the empowerment of the socio-economical back-ward women of the society. It believes that organising the backward sections of the society will lead to their empowerment. They will be able to take part in the decision-making process on different issues in the society. So, in the beginning the Samity had worked in collaboration with Care, West Bengal and NABARD in establishing women's group to work in the field of saving and giving loans. Presently, it is working independently in implementing such projects. Besides, it is also working to increase women's empowerment and self reliance through training programmes and discussion meets. The speciality of self-help groups administered by the Samity is that these groups not only enhances the family income but also promotes the social and cultural development of the family. And this has resulted in successes. Goal of the project is to build organisations for, of and by the women so that these would work for their development.

Activity of the project:

Keeping in track with the objectives and goals of the programme, the women folk of backward section of the society are organised to build up nutrition garden, nurture medicinal plants, get them involve them in social activities, and training. They are trained to nurture old groups, and create new groups. They are also trained in mother and child immunisation programme, registration of birth and death, maintaining group funds, providing loans, hold savings, organise cluster and cluster-based conferences. Also train them to arrange big conferences, district level conferences, form federations of representatives to enhance self reliance. These are the various scheme implemented. The Samity feels that to bring a change in the status of women, individual effort is not sufficient. Effort of group work and organisational effort is necessary. So, a number of systems / infrastructure are operational to sustain the programme. Besides, this the Samity has taken up effort to organize following activities with SHGs members.
